This summer, Fermynwoods Contemporary Art presents new work by three artists; Oliver Bancroft, Chrystel Lebas and Richard Woods. The exhibition demonstrates artists working with the interrogation of the environment as a field of cultural expression. It also explores themes forming the basis of future projects and events at Fermynwoods Offsite, a new venue at Sudborough Green Lodge cottages within nearby Fermyn Woods.

Bancroft showcases his film Apatura Iris filmed on location in Fermyn Woods during his residency in July 2007. Fermyn Woods boast a diverse flora species and is home to The Purple

Emperor butterfly (Apatura Iris). The 16mm documentary style film explores mans relationship to nature combining the Purple Emperors’ beauty and elusive character.

French artist Lebas. photographs are drawn from a similar residency at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art in Rockingham Forest, Nottinghamshire. The new series entitled The Wait, explores how landscapes contain psychological significance in relation to historical events, legends, fairy tales and our own childhood memories.

International artist Richard Woods best known for his sculptures and installations which reactivate the social structures of urban and rural spaces will undertake Phase I of his project at the Water Tower by cladding the interior of the main gallery space with one of his iconic floorboard designs, Logo n.43. Phase II (October 2008) will see Woods undertake a newly commissioned design for Sudborough Green Lodge Cottages by cladding the exterior in a unique temporary candy-coloured faux stone cladding makeover.

For further information about Woods’ installation at Sudborough Green Lodge visit > Our work Elsewhere > Forestry Commission

Both Phase 1 and 2 of the Richard Woods projects are in collaboration with Milton Keynes Gallery who showcase the Woods’ first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery
