A unique opportunity to see works that have printmaking itself at
their heart. Leading printmakers Hughie O’Donoghue and Estelle
Thompson rub shoulders with artists selected from open submission
from all over the UK and as far as America.
As the exhibition’s curator Sean Rorke
explains: “There are eight artists, who have been chosen for
their pure approach to printmaking as an art form equal to drawing
and painting. They have allowed print to be the driving force in
itself. A true artist understands their medium, the materials, and
the possibilities, and yet never underestimates the element of surprise
and the thrill when the print is peeled from the plate, or the final
layer is printed, bringing the image to life.
“As the exhibition demonstrates, printmaking
- unlike painting and drawing -has an unerring capacity to surprise.
No amount of planning and experience can negate the fact that a
print reveals itself only on completion – and expectations
are so often exceeded.”
Fermynwoods Contemporary Art’s artistic
director, Rosalind Stoddart, said: “We are delighted to start
off our 2006 season with such a great show. This is printmaking
at its best - immediate yet subtle, ethereal yet strong in its convictions,
complicated and yet simple in its execution.“
As well as Hughie O’Donoghue and Estelle
Thompson, the exhibition also features work by Mark Balakjian, Californian
Kevin G. Fletcher, and Michelle Keegan, James Keith, Julie Read
and Serena Smith.
