Sue Tarbitten:
The Language of Cloth,
2005
This work was inspired by a strange phenomenon, which was discovered by accident when scanning open weave textiles into the computer, which can sometimes ‘read’ the cloth as text. The artwork was produced by mixing a sound file of the computer reading out a text which it had seen in the scan of a section of net curtain, with sounds from machines used in the production of textiles which were recorded at a variety of locations, including Quarry Bank Mill, The Macclesfield Silk Museum and the Cotswold Woollen Mill at Filkins in Oxfordshire.
