Sophie Herxheimer

Sophie Herxheimer is a London born artist and poet. She’s held residencies for LIFT, Southbank Centre and Transport for London. Exhibitions include The Whitworth, The Poetry Library and The National Portrait Gallery.

Publications include The Listening Forest, created during her residency at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art. Sophie teaches and collaborates extensively.

Art Work Placement an initiative in which five of Fermynwoods’ Associate Artists are collaborating with a group of key businesses in the Northamptonshire. Sophie has partnered with East Northants Council Economic Development.

A collection of 30 poems transcribed phonetically by Sophie in the borrowed voice of her late German Grentmuzzer. Critically acclaim includes The Observer’s Book of The Month.

In July 2017 Sophie showed new work at The Art Stable in Dorset. This was accompanied by a new artists’ book: Your Candle Accompanies The Sun, which features collage poems made in ghost collaboration with poet Emily Dickinson.

SOUND POETRY WORKSHOP WITH CHRIS MCCABE

Sophie and other poets took up residency in four Hull primary schools to run workshops with pupils to encourage students, teachers and staff to read, write and create poetry as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. In a workshop led by Sophie and Chris McCabe, pupils at Alderman Cogan Primary School produced sound poetry inspired by the epic of Beowulf.

Sophie presented new work alongside poets Joseph Coelho, Kate Fox, Joe Hakim, Chris McCabe and Shazea Quraishi at Waterstones Hull for this special National Poetry Day preview event.

 
NATIONAL POETRY DAY

Sophie has produced drawings for National Poetry Day. 2016 had the subject of “Messages”. Resource packs of bags, badges and stickers, all featured an image by Sophie with the phrase “say it with a poem”. Sophie was also invited to become a Poetry Ambassador. Two poems of her choice were selected for an e-book: one by herself and one by a deceased poet. Both were read at events in public spaces. Sophie chose a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva, written in 1939, to pair with one of her sound poems written in the accent of her German grandmother.

 
ARVON FOUNDATION RESIDENCY

In October 2016 Sophie took part in a week-long residency with The Arvon Foundation, creating new work alongside a group of writers in playwright John Osborne’s former home, The Hurst, in Shropshire.

 
FERMYNWOODS RESIDENCY 2016

As part of Fermynwood’s Associate Artists programme, associate artist Sophie Herxheimer took the opportunity to develop a new project of writing and image-making. Sophie took inspiration from the presence of Fermyn Woods’ butterflies, including the Brimstone and the elusive Purple Emperor, to produce new poems as well as artworks in gouache, ink and collage. During her residency she also spent time reading and looking at the work of William Blake to reflect on ideas about constructing one’s own mythology.

Sophie visted Devon with Project Phakama making a new work with students and care home residents as a continuation of The Edible Garden Project.

THE LISTENING FOREST

Sophie undertook a residency at the Poetry Cafe with The Listening Forest, her book made up of the drawings, prints, paper cuts and poems she made during a residency for Fermynwoods.

RETHINK: MIGRATION
The National Maritime Museum
June 2015 – November 2015

Sophie worked with with The Migration Museum Project at The National Maritime Museum, collecting peoples’ stories about ‘home’ and the journeys we make to get there.
