Simon Woolham

Simon Woolham describes his practice as primarily concerned with occupied spaces and the narratives that unfold in them, using biro drawings, paper interventions, animation, video and text to unearth the unpredictable and fragile process of memory.

More recently Simon has made a series of interventions, films and animations and text that focus on recurring motives that often feature in the work, ditches, unofficial dumps and breached security fences.

TAKING-BACK-SPACE – THE MACC WALKS
Barnaby Festival
6.30-9pm, Friday 17 June
10am-4pm, Saturday 18 – Sunday 26 June

These filmed vignettes viewed in a ‘shed’ outside the Town Hall, are re-enacted scenes based on a series of walks around Macclesfield. Simon devises shared explorations of the past with people who grew up here. The walks started out from the house where the person was born, still lives, or spent the majority of their childhood, guided towards different locations by their memories. Simon encourages streams of consciousness and layers of ‘memory tapes’: a contemplative act around a community and its spaces. Read more on the Barnaby Festival’s website.

RURAL WALKS: MEMORY GUIDED ROUTES – WALKING OUT FROM HOME
North East Derbyshire
2015-2016

Commisioned by Junction Arts,

The Rural Walks are a series of walks starting out from the house where the person was born, still lives, or spent the majority of their time during childhood. Guided by the co-walkers own memories, the artist and participant walk towards different locations, depending on what they talk about. The walks are discreetly sound recorded during the initial physical walks and later developed as an ongoing series of re-enacted narratives and measured filmed stills, taken from carefully chosen sites.
