Art + Collaboration

7-8.30pm, Tuesday 6 May 2014

Shane Waltener and Zoë Gilmour shared ideas on the meaning of creative collaboration with relation to their own practice and recent joined projects. As both artists are experienced in working in participatory settings, relying on multi disciplinary and sensorial approaches, the event included a practical and experiential element.

Shane Waltener’s work draws inspiration from craft. Objects and installations reference a broad range of making practices, from needlecraft and sugarcraft to textile weaving and basketry. Recent projects by the artist, increasingly participatory and performative, involve audiences contributing to the making of the artwork in order to facilitate the cultural and social histories relating to these crafts to be freely exchanged through a collaborative process.

Shane Waltener lives and works in London. He is an associate artist with Entelechy Arts and a lecturer at the University of the Arts, London. He has recently co-authored Practical Basketry Techniques (publ. A&C Black) and is currently working on a book on sculpture (Quarto Publishing).

Zoë Gilmour integrates art with music and specialises in connecting creatively with people who have complex communication needs. Participatory practice is at the centre of all of her work, sometimes via making and soundscape, sometimes through body and voice. She is currently collaborating with Shane Waltener on “Meet me at The Albany” an emerging creative hub for the over 60s and “Little Boxes of Memories” an intergenerational project led by Entelechy Arts in partnership with the Museum of London.

Zoë is associate artist/musician with Entelechy Arts, Trinity Laban Conservatoire and Age Exchange Reminiscence Arts. She has devised numerous small pieces for festivals and cabaret including “Critical Ornithology” (human birdsong) and has been performing and touring worldwide for over 16 years with the avant punk band, Gertrude, with which she is vocalist and electric cellist.
