Stephen Turner
Tree Rings

11 September — 2 November 2008

Stephen Turner’s explores the passage of seasons by leaving large canvases beneath trees to collect the marks & deposits made by nature. Each canvas encircles the tree trunk & covers the ground providing a unique record of the ecology of an individual tree recording cycles of growth, decay & rejuvenation.

This exhibition saw Turner return to his partnership with nature, through the use of cherry trees with the Water Tower gallery grounds & demonstrated his sheer delight in the alchemy of the natural world. Boiling down brittle dry leaves & cherries the artist created a golden brown essence which he daubed directly onto paper creating beautiful organically flowing forms that resemble the very tree it originated from.

Turner also installed canvases beneath the cherry trees which could be observed in a time lapse film where the canvases will remain in situ during the exhibition.
