Pak-Keung Wan
Morphologies
13 September — 28 October 2007
A solo exhibition by Pak-Keung Wan, comprised new & recent works revealing the depth of his practice, in drawing & installation. His work often explores how things become embodied, how they originate & the processes involved.
Wan’s pencil drawings involve complex & intricate forms that resemble bacteria, fauna & even alien life. The artist maintains one ‘rule’ when drawing, the works must consist of a single pencil line, & that when this line extends, it returns to its beginning point before extending out again – only at these points where the line can touch.
Wan also produced an installation specifically for The Water Tower (a 52ft architectural feature which was an integral part of the gallery building). Exploiting the very building itself as a former Water Tower to inform the work, Wan collected his condensed breath (speaking into it vessels with words that arise over a period of time) shown as a 16mm film of a droplet from the condensed breath which was then projected.
