Oliver Bancroft: Apatura Iris, Chrystel Lebas: The Wait, Richard Woods: Logo no. 43
The exhibition includes new work by Oliver Bancroft, Chrystel Lebas & Richard Woods, demonstrating artists working with the interrogation of the environment as a field of cultural expression.
Bancroft showcased his film Apatura Iris filmed on location in Fermyn Woods during his residency in July 2007. Fermyn Woods boast a diverse flora species & is home to The Purple Emperor butterfly (Apatura Iris). The 16mm documentary style film explored man’s relationship to nature combining the Purple Emperors’ beauty & elusive character.
French artist Lebas’ photographs were drawn from a similar residency at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art in Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire. The series entitled The Wait, explored how landscapes contain psychological significance in relation to historical events, legends, fairy tales & our own childhood memories.
International artist Richard Woods best known for his sculptures & installations which reactivate the social structures of urban & rural spaces undertook Phase I of his project at the Water Tower by cladding the interior of the main gallery space with one of his iconic floorboard designs, Logo n.43.
