Susie Turner

June – July 2011

Printmaker Susie Turner has been working with students from William Knibb to explore innovative printmaking possibilities by combining traditional methods with contemporary techniques, extending 2D imagery into 3D form, and using photography, drawing, mould making and casting to explore and develop ideas. As well as learning how to use printmaking tools they are encouraged to explore the mark making potential of materials found and made.

Considering the use of existing imagery and text, found on location or within newspapers, allows the students to bring in elements connected with the everyday and their own social identity. In direct response to the unique and isolated setting of the workshops within Fermyn Woods, the students are given the freedom to express themselves and inadvertently explore aspects of their own identity, sense of self and belonging.

Susie’s own practice explores parallels and patterns in nature and culture through the use of transient material and natural phenomena, considering further the role of location and how it can facilitate a better understanding of oneself and their place in the world.
