Processing and Probotix

June 2011 – The Kingswood School, Corby

In November 2010, Fermynwoods commissioned Tree, an interactive artwork by Simon Heijdens, in Corby.

Following on from this installation, our Education Officer James Steventon developed a series of workshops for schools exploring the connections between drawing and new interactive technologies, covering Maths, ICT and Art & Design curriculum areas.

Working with Year 8 students from The Kingswood School, Corby, this initiative used Probotix software in the school’s new ICT suite to introduce basic programming language whilst exploring shape, coordinates and algebra.

Building on this, students were introduced to Processing, an open source programming language and environment currently being used by many ‘Computational-Artists’ such as Simon Heijdens.

The result was an interactive application written by each student using shape, line and colour.

The project will culminate in a collaborative application which will respond to public interaction through an automated reading of Twitter streams.

With additional financial support from the Constance Travis Trust Fund, managed by the Northamptonshire Community Foundation.
