Irthlingborough Infants
Fermyn Woods, Northants, 2012
Over two days in March 2012, over 100 Year One students from Irthlingborough Nursery and Infant School held their annual school trip with Fermynwoods Contemporary Art.
Visiting our Sudborough Green Lodge site, children took part in workshops with Kenneth James Martin and our Education Officer, James Steventon. In addition to the excellent opportunity to learn outside of the classroom in a stimulating outdoor environment, children explored the surrounding woodland and had a picnic lunch overlooking the SSSi wildflower meadow.
Kenneth James Martin led children on a ramble through the forest discovering a colony of concrete rabbits, which formed a variety of group sculptures and trails as the children arranged the bunnies in the woods. Discovering the Danish Shelters, children created their own rabbit habitats , including a plentiful supply of organic carrots to keep both the rabbits and themselves well fed.
James Steventon led a printmaking workshop in the garden of Sudborough Green Lodge, where children explored mono-printing techniques using gathered natural materials. When the sun came out children also used these materials to create cyanotype photographic prints using the sun’s energy.
