Tree Listening is a sound based work which links both science & art by engaging the public with the inner workings of trees. The installation proved a huge success attracting tens of thousands of visitors at Fermyn Woods Country Park.

The installation gave the opportunity to listen to the inner workings of a tree (here a Silver Birch) through sets of headphones which dangled from the branches. Visitors could then listen to the sound of the water being pulled up from the roots to the leaves through the xylem tubes (caused by the water mixing with air it moves up the inside of the tree). The device captivated adults & children alike with its curious connection to the natural world never experienced before!
